Hanabusa Inari Shrine at Akihabara, Tokyo

A tiny Edo-period Inari shrine hidden down an alley off Akihabara's main drag.

Hanabusa Inari Shrine is a small Shinto shrine tucked down a narrow alley in Sotokanda 4-chome, just metres from Akihabara's busiest streets.

Dating from the Edo period, the fox-guarded shrine has survived fires and redevelopment to remain one of Akihabara's best-kept secrets, with visitors threading between tall buildings to reach its quiet torii gates. It is one of several Inari shrines dotted through the neighbourhood and offers a serene contrast to the surrounding electronics shops.
